Blogging has been an on-again off-again endeavor for me (as can be seen over at rustypants.net, my personal blog that I’ve sporadically updated since 2004). I love writing, and as an English teacher, I write frequently, but I don’t always share what I’ve written just because it’s… well, it’s personal. I’m not sure that most folks would care to read what I think regarding this or that. But more than that, I’m not sure I want other people to know what bounces around inside my head.
But photography is different. It’s a medium that doesn’t require words. It allows others to bring their own interpretation and feelings to it, to figure out their own meaning of the shot. I like the flexibility that photography, that a picture, gives us.
Unlike my writing, I love to share my photos. It never ceases to amaze me the shots that some people absolutely love and others are indifferent towards. I get a real kick out of thinking Ooooh, this one’s a winner! Everyone’s gonna love this! only to find that I’m the only one who gets anything out of that particular shot. Even the physical action of taking pictures is thrilling to me, and I rarely leave the house without having my Pentax K-5 IIs with me.
I’m not sure what this button is gonna do, but I’m gonna press it anyway.
