Back in 2019-20 I was doing shoots in a number of abandoned buildings – a mansion, a 100+ year old school building, and a print shop among others. There’s a certain thrill of finding a place, scoping it out, looking at safe spots within the structure, and planning the shoot. And there’s that thrill of being in a place we know we’re not supposed to be and the risk involved.
This was an abandoned print shop that had been pretty torn apart inside – walls taken down, leftover equipment and paper scattered everywhere, floors pulled up, and very little ambient light inside. But there were a few spaces in this shop that were ripe for using.
This window was between a large main room and a tiny side room (so small that we couldn’t really shoot IN it because there was nowhere for us to maneuver, even with a 15mm lens). There was a large industrial window just across from this one that looked outside the building, but the glass was filthy and it was very overcast and raining outside. Ambient light was minimal, but we made a go of it.
Cat is powerful, short and very flexible – she was able to get into this window pretty easily, and I moved around as much as I could for different vantage points within the tiny space I had. The shoes stayed on the entire time in this place because there was just too much clutter, and it was very difficult to see.
Photos are obviously very grainy due to extremely low light.
